Hybrid Neurotag Retraining
Hybrid Neurotag Retraining
Hybrid neurotag retraining is the process of massaging an area while it is actively moving to help the brain identify safety.
The purpose is to help the brain feel safe throughout a joint’s healthy range of motion to reduce its fear of movement.
It is a gentle method designed to build trust from within.
- Hybrid Neurotag Retraining: Is a hybrid treatment that combines passive massage strategies with client-initiated active movement.
Relationships with Others Mirror Relationships Within
If you were spending time with someone who predictably pushed you out of your comfort zone, you likely wouldn’t enjoy being around them. How could you trust someone who was inconsiderate of your needs?
Our brain often has the same disdain toward our actions when we habitually put our body in danger. This is how the brain often views us when we test its patience and push it further than it deems safe.
Our brain has comfort zones with each joint. If we force a knee to move more than the brain thinks is safe, it trains it to think we are irresponsible.
As any parent knows, an irresponsible child is more than a headache; it can be downright scary. This is why some parents put their children on leashes when in public. It isn’t because they are mean or cruel; rather, it is because their child is unpredictable and irresponsible.
They want to keep them safe and believe this is the only thing that has a chance of working. Sometimes our brain does the same thing to us, by restricting our range of motion or by making it uncomfortable to move.
The Brain Prevents Us From Moving?
In the absence of active tissue injury, it is unlikely that the area is being restricted by the soft tissues.
Instead, the more likely explanation is that the brain is afraid of the area being hurt, so it restricts access to movement.
The process of regaining range of movement has more to do with neuroplasticity than residual post-injury adhesions.
I Thought Therapists Broke Up Adhesions & Scar Tissue?
Some research suggests that massage may help with scar tissue health, especially early on, but it is unlikely to be the end-all, cure-all for scar tissue repair.
That isn’t to say that massage isn’t valuable for scars. I have some wicked scars that love to be massaged. I have even had a few massages that had lasting, dramatic results for the management of scar-related pain.
The question we need to ask is, why do we want our scars worked on? For some, it is because they find them unsightly, but for most, it is because they are uncomfortable or restrict their range of motion.
If those are your goals, then you are in luck, because both problems tend to be located within the brain. One is a self-perception, while the other is the brain’s perception of safety and danger.
The brain is malleable, meaning it can be changed. People change their minds all the time, and so can you.
It’s actually better that it is a brain perception issue, because those can be transformed without invasive surgeries and pharmaceuticals.
Hybrid Neurotag Retraining = Trust Building
Safety is the central theme of pain management massage. The goal is to encourage trust so that the brain responds appropriately to all stimuli.
In many pain-focused treatments across the massage and wellness industry, pain and discomfort are the tools of choice. It is widely believed that pain is injury and weakness, leaving the body, when in reality, pain provides the brain with more practice to create more pain.
In Hybrid Neurotag Retraining, instead of pushing the body beyond its limits to improve, we allow it to develop trust within its comfort zone.
Pain Management Massage
Pain Relief Through Safety
Earlier, we discussed the consequences of having an inconsiderate person in your life, especially one who habitually pushes you out of your comfort zone.
Now we are going to imagine someone who respects your boundaries and is considerate and safe. This is the type of person you can trust, but isn’t just a bump on a log. They are a leader; they don’t push you with brute force; instead, they use kindness to encourage you to reach higher.
Which type of pain management method would you want to be guided by? One who pushes you along, even when you’re tired and can’t move, or one who inspires you to take another step?
A Safe Container
Hybrid Neurotag Retraining leads you forward, but you have to take the step. It creates a safe container that encourages you, but you must earn your brain’s trust.
Prior to starting, we need to ensure the target areas are appropriately sensitized to touch so that, when massaged, they don’t trigger increased fear and, as a consequence, more pain.
Perceived safety must be earned; it cannot be forced. You and your nervous system have to feel safe enough to be vulnerable and to communicate. Which usually requires a previously established pattern of peace, ease and pain relief.
Take the Next Step: Book A Massage
Hybrid Neurotag Retraining focuses on changing the patterns your nervous system has learned around pain and protection. Skilled hands-on massage can support this process by providing consistent sensory information that helps those patterns shift.
