My Role

I do not offer cognitive behavioral therapy or psychological counseling, but I think they are important. In the context of pain management, I offer three primary services: Pain Management Massage, Pain Management Coaching, and Massage Instruction.

  • Pain Management Massage: As your massage therapist, I want to help your brain identify patterns of safety, reduce central sensitization, and feel wonderful.
  • Pain Management Coaching: As your pain coach, I am here to teach you pain neuroscience education, inspire you to have hope, and encourage you to search for and develop SIMs.
  • Massage Instructor: As your massage instructor, I want to teach you ways to self-soothe and integrate massage and wholesome touch into your everyday life.

Pain Neuroscience Education

I will help you to the best of my ability within my scope of practice, but I am not the only resource you can draw upon for help. Certain levels and types of pain may require the assistance of mental health professionals.

In fact, studies indicate that manual therapies combined with pain neuroscience education and talk therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other psychological approaches, tend to produce stronger overall outcomes than single-modality treatments.

I don’t want you to be dependent on anyone for your quality of life; instead, I want you to become the reason you live so well. When you have the right resources, information, and tools, you’re set up for success, and I want to see you succeed. When you have a team of dedicated professionals on your side, you will have a powerful levee to hold back the tide.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Our feelings can be tricky little creatures, especially if we have experienced a lot of trauma. We may think we are managing our pain well when, in fact, we are blindly standing at the edge of a ledge.

This is one of the reasons why having a mental health professional in your life is so important. They offer another set of eyes and ears to serve as a nonjudgmental sounding board to interpret existence.

When digging into the deep and dark parts of your trauma, I strongly suggest seeking out the guidance of a qualified mental health professional. There is nothing wrong with sharing your feelings; there is nothing wrong with crying. Everyone hurts, and everyone needs to share how they hurt. It’s okay for you to share your hurt in a space with someone trained to help you.

CBT

Benefits of CBT for Pain

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for pain management is a well-established, evidence-based psychological approach that helps people develop practical skills to cope with chronic pain. CBT therapists help people understand the interplay between thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and physical sensations instead of just focusing on getting rid of the pain.

It serves as a lifelong resource for effectively managing and adapting to traumatic experiences and injuries. The benefits of CBT may include:

  • Improved mood and reduced emotional distress
  • Decreased pain catastrophizing and fear:
  • Better daily functioning and quality of life
  • Enhanced coping and self-efficacy
  • Reduced reliance on medications
  • Achieving a sustainable quality of life

Next Step

CBT can be a helpful complementary approach when past experiences continue to shape protective patterns. While I do not offer CBT, Discovering Safety Within and pain management coaching provide guided support that can work alongside a licensed professional who offers Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
