What is Bioplasticity?
Bioplasticity refers to the body’s ability to adapt across all its systems. Soft tissues, bone, blood vessels, and metabolic processes all respond to the demands placed on them. These adaptations can be structural or functional.
- Structural changes include alterations in tissue size, density, or composition.
- Functional changes include shifts in how effectively a system performs its role.
Repeated loading, a term used to describe the physical demand placed on a tissue or system, can increase a tissue’s strength or capacity. Reduced loading or prolonged stress can decrease it. Muscle tissue can increase or decrease in size and force capacity. Bone density can rise or fall according to mechanical stress. Connective tissues can become more or less resilient. Circulatory and metabolic systems can adjust their efficiency based on repeated demand, all occurring at the level of cells, tissues, and organ systems.
What is Neuroplasticity?
Neuroplasticity, a subset of bioplasticity, refers to the nervous system’s capacity to change its structure and function in response to experiences. This reorganization happens primarily through changes in the synapses, the connections between nerve cells, which can strengthen or weaken based on use.
When synapses are frequently activated, they become more efficient at transmitting information. Conversely, less-used synapses may weaken, slowing information transmission and potentially contributing to chronic pain conditions.
New synapses can form, and existing ones can become more or less active. This process occurs during skill learning, habit formation, and recovery after an injury. It also occurs with protective responses. When the nervous system repeatedly activates an alarm response, the related synapses strengthen and become easier to trigger. This can result in more intense, widespread, and frequent pain.
The same capacity allows synapses that support less protective responses to form or strengthen when the brain receives consistent evidence of safety.
