Golden Rule of Massage
Learn how to use the golden rule of massage to make every massage you perform magnificent.
What is the Golden Rule
The golden rule of massage mirrors the actual golden rule. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” To accomplish this in massage, imagine how you would like to feel, and find a way to help someone feel it themselves.
You do this by asking yourself, ” What do they want to feel?” Once you know the answer, you have done what we all want from everyone else. At the most basic level, we want people to just be considerate of our wants and needs.
Everyone wants to feel good, but the path to reach that destination is different for everyone. For example, just because you want deep tissue doesn’t mean everyone else wants or needs it. The golden rule of massage isn’t treating others how you specifically want to be treated; it’s contemplating and integrating considerateness into your sessions and daily life.
We want to be massaged and touched by the people who care about us. Would you rather spend time with someone who wants to be in your company, or someone who feels obligated to be around you?
When you are massaged by someone who truly cares about how you feel, and hopes every second of your session is spectacular, it elevates the experience. If you are being massaged by someone who isn’t present and doesn’t care, it can make you feel like a machine part being manufactured in a factory.
How someone feels and thinks about giving the massage affects the quality of their touch. This is one reason AI massage robots will never replace quality licensed massage therapists. A robot, no matter how lifelike or how well they simulate the techniques of a human, will never be a replacement for a kind mortal mind.
Joy of Giving
At the heart of massage is the joy of giving. It is an opportunity to celebrate the life of another soul and to guide them toward feeling delightful. When you allow yourself to enjoy the act of giving goodness, it enriches every second and reveals the sweetness of existence.
Massage is the physical expression of your caring heart; when your intent is clear, clean, and kind, it creates a space to celebrate another person’s days in beautiful, wholesome ways.
To be in this space, harmonize your heart and replace your woe with hope. Find joy in your drive to provide, satisfaction from your ability to offer a safe space, and peace from knowing you can help inspire others to dance and sing gleefully.
Harmonize Your Heart and Replace Your Woe with Hope
There will be times when it is difficult to see the brilliance and beauty of life. In these moments, take a breath and breathe. Think about all of the wonderful things that encourage you to feel free. Close your eyes and search for the sweetness of the second. Feel the world around you, listen to the moving air, run your hands through your hair, and share some of your favorite memories and moments.
The intricate details of existence can sometimes become an invisible burden that weighs down your shoulders until you are too weary and tired to walk. While some intricacies can slow us down, others can pull us up and inspire us to reach higher than ever before.
When I was going through chemotherapy, I learned how to see the magnificence in every moment. While in my greatest degrees of pain, I discovered that:
In every second is a snapshot of infinite beauty and awe. No matter how closely you look at something, there is always more to see.
No matter where you are in life, there is a bright light that can illuminate your sight. Sometimes we just have to turn our eyes to the side to see the magnificence waiting to be seen.
If you find yourself lost, confused, and heartbroken, and the darkness feels like it is pooling and swelling at your feet. Close your eyes, and breathe. Search for the thoughts, feelings, and memories that want to give you a reprieve.
Now open them and find something nearby, pull it close, and admire it for every intricate detail it has to offer. Try to describe what you see and feel with your fingers, savor every sensation.
Settle in that space for a bit. Whisper sweet and comforting words to yourself, think about the delightful times, and how things have always gotten better.
Sometimes, all we need is to feel alive and be reminded of our humanity. When your heart feels stuffy, lethargic, or dark, introduce a nimbus light into your life.
Try lightly touching your skin with a finger, slowly drawing a line across your arm. What does it feel like? Search your mind for words that are more than “good or meh”. Dial in on what you feel; do you notice the soft hair of your arm against your fingertips? How warm or cool is your skin, where is it soft and rough?
Now knead and gently squeeze the muscles of your forearm, marvel at each sensation, and sit with what you feel for more than a minute.
Isn’t it more rewarding to be exploring the intricate details of existence than allowing yourself to be overwhelmed by a whirlwind of woe?
Feel the Spirit of Life
Take a moment to feel the Spirit within you. Allow the infinite goodness to guide and inspire you. Feel the radiant life flow from your fingers to your toes as you enjoy every ounce of its nimbus glow.
Allow your altruistic, benevolent need to help others wiggle with glee. Guide this divine energy from your heart into your hands, and become an agent of good who inspires hope and happiness throughout the land.
When performing a massage, the goal is to give for the sake of goodness, be present, and focus solely on the person being massaged.
If, in the moment, your thoughts are creating a blockade that is preventing you from focusing in this way, reflect on a moment when you wanted to offer solace to someone experiencing discomfort.
Tap into the memory, feel the help and hope you sought to bestow. Harmonize this feeling with your faith that everything will be okay, and use it to inspire your touch to massage in wonderful ways.
Remember to Have Fun
Having fun is really important. If massaging is not fulfilling, ask yourself why. Is it because it’s boring? Is it physically or emotionally draining? Does it make your hands hurt? Is it too tedious? Sometimes people avoid massage because they are unsure of what to do or lack confidence in their technique. You can overcome this and build the confidence, skill, and patience to give a spectacular massage while having fun.
