Body Perception Disorder
Learn about body perception disorder and its role in chronic pain and symptoms like hyperalgesia and allodynia.
Body Perception Disorder
Body perception disorder isn’t a clinical diagnosis, but a range of conditions where someone has a distorted, altered, or disrupted awareness, ownership, or understanding of their body.
An individual experiencing body perception disorder may feel like an area of their body doesn’t belong, believe it is a different size or shape than it should be, experience emotional detachment with the affected area, or dislike the limb. Body perception disorder is often linked to allodynia, hyperalgesia, or central sensitization.
In chronic pain, people with CRPS, low back pain, fibromyalgia, neurological issues, and psychiatric conditions sometimes experience body perception disorder.
Take the Next Step
When body perception becomes distorted, everyday movement and sensation can feel less reliable or more threatening. Pain management coaching addresses this by helping you rebuild clearer, safer maps of your body through education, carefully paced sensory input, and practical regulation skills.
