Art of Massage
Learn about the art of massage, why trades are so important, why imagination is so important, and pathways to grow as a massage therapist.
The Art of Massage
A massage is a story, or at the very least it should tell one. In this story, the person being massaged is the main character, and every technique you use should contribute to the narrative, so they can experience the peace, ease, and pain relief they need.
Massage, like art, storytelling, and writing, is a labor of love. Fundamentally, you need to love what you are doing to create something incredible. If you have lost this love, I want to help you find it again.
Perhaps you are passionate about your profession, but are searching for new ways to elevate your work. If you are anything like me, you want to create the best massage experience for your client every session. Not to collect hundreds of five-star reviews on Google, but to give someone an experience they will treasure forever.
I want to inspire you, encourage you to look at your career in a new way, explore the magnificence of massage, and transform every second of your sessions so it feels spectacular.
The Massage Trade
Massage trades are a fundamental part of our culture as massage therapists. Unfortunately, it is now a mostly forgotten practice. As professionals, we’re often too busy, or the skill gap seems too wide for LMTs to want to trade with one another.
By not participating in trades, we limit our ability to rest, replenish, and learn. We need to remember what it feels like to be a client so we can cultivate the mystique of massage. Few massage therapists participate in the same self-care we suggest to our clients, which can lead to burnout and injury. Our craft requires input, exploration, and engaging sensory experiences to develop. Too many massage therapists fear another practitioner stealing their valued techniques, so they avoid trades or give mediocre massages when a colleague schedules with them.
Massage can be a lonely endeavor, as we massage for hours each day and rarely interact with our peers except on breaks. This can be draining; it can cause you to disconnect from your body, wounding your mind-body connection.
As massage therapists, we must have a healthy mind-body connection. Without it, our ability to empathize with our clients becomes greatly diminished. We need to know how something feels so we can creatively cultivate the massage story they want to experience.
At the core of this are massage trades, because they let us enjoy the fruit of our labor without breaking the bank. When we trade, it replenishes the spirit of two hopeful souls, reminds you that life is delightful, and reveals ideas, approaches, and techniques that might transform how you perform a massage.
I want you to walk into your treatment room replenished and glowing, so you have the focus and energy to help the suffering souls who seek you out regain hope.
Explore Your Imagination
As massage therapists, our ability to creatively explore during a session is limited by how much we are using our imagination outside of it. Massage is an art; all creative endeavors require other sources of imagination to fuel them. You need a muse, a hobby, something that shines a bright light on your life, invigorates you, and pushes you forward.
Think about your life: who or what makes you always smile when you see them in your mind’s eye? What are the activities that ignite the fire of your soul? What is the driving passion behind every goal?
If you can’t see or feel it, I want to guide you back to that place, so your heart can feel safe enough to spread its wings and fly. I want to remind you to have hope, to do more than just cope and survive. I want to see you thrive!
Artistic Expression
Massage is more than an academic practice; it is an art form that combines discipline, theory, and creative expression into one beautiful package. It explores our creativity, humility, and empathy.
When we attempt to create a masterpiece, it manifests as your peace and pleasure, and our paintbrush is our hands, arms, elbows, and sometimes feet. In the beginning, we learn the vaguest techniques and a little theory before we are sent off on our own journey. Over time, we develop styles, methods, and skill sets designed to help you live your best life.
I believe massage is more of an art than a science. While academic knowledge is valuable, a book won’t show us how to be present in the moment, how to provide the perfect amount of pressure, or how to adapt from second to second.
At the center of an amazing massage is our relationship with touch, and we can’t develop that through academic study. We have to touch and be touched. Touch is more than laying our hands on someone else; it must be infused with intent. We must genuinely want to help the person we are touching without ulterior motive. From surface to center, we must want to help this person, to inspire them to rise higher, and feel alive.
I believe the most effective way to develop our sense of touch is through artistic expression. As a creative person, I utilize my experience as an artist and a writer to provide a transformative massage experience in each session. I do this by creating an experience you can follow and trust. This means your peace and ease becomes the story, your pleasure is the narrative. There may be twists and turns to create variety, but every technique is balanced and in harmony.
At the core of my approach, I use an adapted version of the elements and principles of art. This helps me encourage a complete experience that feels whole and wholesome. It inspires my application of touch to remain creative, and it fosters a fantastic experience.
I believe touch is an intuitive ability to feel through a massage session, to explore through palpation and provide a sense of peace and ease that is selfless, ethical and safe. When the touch is combined with the ability to express oneself through creativity it forms one of the most important cornerstones of a magnificent massage. It opens the doorway for a therapist to weave a spectacular story with a purposeful plot, it creates a painting that awes and inspires and encourages you to feel delightfully alive.
Massage Mentorship
I want to introduce you to the art of massage like we all should have been when we went to massage school. You will learn how to touch, communicate with kindness, explore palception, tactile dialogue, and how pain actually works. I will teach you how to study and improve every technique from second to second using the elements of touch.
You will learn how to organize your massage routine, use and create micro-formulas, and adapt to your client’s needs on a moment’s notice. I have so much I want to teach you, so you can reach for the stars and achieve your dreams while helping others find pain relief.
If you are ready to provide people with the peace and ease they seek, reach out to me and discover how it feels to give massages that provide real relief.
