Massage Trades
Why should we participate in massage trades? Massage encourages wonder, peace, and serenity in those who receive it. It is more than a luxury; it reconnects us with our humanity, revitalizes our lives, and reminds us we are alive.
Unfortunately, as massage therapists, we often fail to receive the massages we need to remain connected to our talents. When you engage with massage trades, it reminds you how it feels to be a client and introduces you to how someone else performs their massages.
Massage Trades Are Great Practice
As a professional, I’m sure you have had clients who don’t communicate during a session. This often happens because they struggle to articulate their thoughts, especially about how something feels. Most people don’t have a robust somatic vocabulary, so their feedback is often limited.
Even if they have a glossary of great words to describe what they are feeling, we want them to be as relaxed as possible. When you are melting into the table, it can be challenging to muster the might to use the right words to describe what you are feeling.
Massage trades are an opportunity to practice your communication skills, gain insight into the client’s experience, develop humility, learn new techniques, and replenish.
Respect the Art
Massage professionals who genuinely care about the art of massage give their fellow massage practitioners the same level of care they give a regular client. They don’t let their ego or fear of someone stealing their massage techniques prevent them from using their most effective methods in a session.
Holding back your most effective techniques when massaging another therapist can prevent:
- The expansion of knowledge
- Another massage therapist from replenishing
It Prevents the Expansion of Knowledge
Massage is an art; it is beautiful, and one of the greatest gifts bestowed upon humanity. Everything we know and do has been done by someone else. Since the dawn of time, massage therapists have come and gone in so many iterations that I can guarantee there is nothing new under the sun.
The techniques you have developed are magnificent, and they should be treasured and honored. There is a sweet spot in your soul that has transformed your ideas into techniques that have soothed so many souls. I am thankful and inspired by what you know and have developed to care for others. But know that the foundation of everything you use was built from what someone else created.
If you know you are working with another massage therapist, give to them as you would give to anyone else. If they absorb some of your techniques, be flattered, because it means you inspired them to reach higher as a professional.
Another therapist adopting your techniques does not diminish your massage quality or prevent you from succeeding. Just because they adapt your technique into their approach doesn’t mean they’ll steal your clients or make your treatment less unique. Instead, it helps the industry, enriches someone else’s experiences, and spreads joy.
A massage artist wants the industry to thrive and be abundant with great massage therapists, because we are in this profession to make life a little brighter. Wouldn’t it be delightful to provide such a magnificent massage that you can bring delight to someone’s life through another massage therapist’s hands?
It Prevents Another Massage Therapist from Replenishing
When a massage therapist visits you, it is because they need help. They want to be reminded why life is bright and delightful. It is an honor to be visited by another passionate soul, especially one who is in the business of helping others have hope.
When you refuse to share your best massage techniques with another practitioner, you rob them of an opportunity to cope.
