Massage For CRPS

Living with CRPS often means ordinary touch can feel overwhelming or unpredictable. Many people with this condition worry that a massage will make symptoms worse or trigger a flare. That concern is valid, and we take it seriously.

In a typical massage, a therapist might begin near the area of greatest discomfort. With CRPS, the opposite approach is the case. In your first massage session, the most sensitive area may be left alone entirely. The focus stays on providing gentle, predictable touch in places that feel more manageable. This helps your system experience comfort and safety first, which can lower the chance of increased sensitivity or a flare.

When the affected area is eventually addressed, the work remains extremely light and carefully paced. Even feather-light pressure can sometimes feel intense when allodynia is present, so every step is guided by what feels tolerable and enjoyable to you in the moment. The goal isn’t to push through the discomfort, but to create conditions where touch can gradually feel less threatening.

You remain in control of the pace and pressure throughout the entire session. Clear communication is encouraged, so the massage stays within a range that supports ease.

Discovering Safety Within

For someone living with CRPS, the Discovering Safety Within approach offers a structured way to work with both the physical sensitivity and the protective responses that often develop around it.

Building Safety focuses on creating repeated experiences of comfort and predictability. Sessions begin in areas that feel manageable so your nervous system can register safety before you focus on the most sensitive areas. This gradual process helps reduce the constant high-alert state that frequently accompanies CRPS.

Sharpening Discernment supports clearer understanding of the sensations you experience. Through gentle, paced touch and simple guidance, you learn to notice the difference between useful protective information and the extra intensity that can arise from allodynia or long-term sensitization.

Quieting the Noise addresses the way stress, fear, and prolonged protection can amplify discomfort. Careful pacing, supportive language, and practical self-regulation tools help ordinary sensations feel less overwhelming over time. Coaching reinforces these skills between sessions, giving you ways to manage flares and reduce the extra volume that stress can add to CRPS symptoms.

Together, the hands-on massage and coaching create a consistent message of safety. The goal isn’t to force change through pressure, but to help your system gradually learn that comfort is possible.

Contraindications For CRPS

Your CRPS experience is unique, but general guidelines should always be considered during care.

Cryotherapy and Cold Therapy

Cold therapy is generally not suitable for people with CRPS. While cool temperatures can feel calming for some, the cold can have unpredictable and intense effects when complex regional pain syndrome is present. Your condition often disrupts normal blood flow and nervous system regulation, so even mild coolness may trigger strong protective responses, increase sensitivity, or cause a flare. For this reason, avoid cold applications in affected areas.

Hot Stone Massage and Heat

Hot stone massage and similar forms of intense or fluctuating heat are also avoided. Rapid temperature changes and the weight or pressure of stones can feel overwhelming and may increase discomfort or risk skin irritation. Even though some people with cold-type find gentle, steady warmth soothing, hot stone massage and heat are avoided to minimize risk.

Cupping and Vacuum Treatments

Vacuum cupping is not used on limbs or regions affected by complex regional pain syndrome because of the added stress it can place on already sensitive tissues and blood vessels.
