Cortical Body Matrix
Cortical Body Matrix
The cortical body matrix theory posits a matrix of thalamocortical neural loops that subserve the protection and regulation of the body and the space around it at both physiological and perceptual levels.
What does this mean? The cortical body matrix is a dynamic network of neurons that regulates and protects the body and the surrounding space.
It constantly updates the brain’s overall map, including the somatosensory map. combining physical sensations, motor functions, spatial awareness, and internal physical states into one cohesive understanding.
Take the Next Step
The cortical body matrix helps explain how your brain represents your body and the space around it, and how that representation can change with pain and protection. Pain management coaching works with these ideas by helping you rebuild clearer, safer maps of your body through education, sensory input, and practical regulation skills.
